Having a pet can be expensive. Between the cost of food, veterinary care and other essentials, caring for a pet can feel costlier than ever. There are, however, resources available for pet owners that can save on costs.

Affordable Veterinary Care
One of the biggest costs associated with caring for a pet is veterinary care. Even with insurance, unexpected appointments and emergencies can become expensive. Veterinary care is vital for keeping your pet healthy and there are ways for you to optimize your pet care costs.
When you first acquire a pet, the best way to save costs is reaching out to fellow pet owners, who may have suggestions of good affordable veterinarians in your area. Once you’re given some options, you can contact the different offices to compare costs before deciding on the best one for you and your price point. Certain non-profit veterinary offices offer services to low-income pet owners. Additionally, certain cities across the country, such as the City of London, have programs such as affordable routine wellness exams and spay/neuter programs.
To further save on costs, you can explore different insurance options and payment plans, which allow you to offset some costs on more expensive surgeries and procedures. Organizations such as Scratchpay and Petcard offer different financing options and payment plans to help support ongoing vet costs.
Additionally, there are some animal charities and animal welfare organizations that offer subsidized vet services at a cheaper price than veterinary offices. Many SPCA and Humane Societies across the country provide some services, in addition to more local animal charities, such as PAWS and Farley Foundation in Ontario. Pet Food Banks
While there are a lot of food options at different price points, the costs of feeding your pet a balanced diet can add up. Certain pets may also require certain dietary requirements that can often be more expensive. There are resources available to pet-owners for free and low-cost food called pet banks. Pet food banks are community-based organizations which offer free food and other essential pet supplies such as litter and toys to pet owners facing financial hardships. Food banks often received unused and unopened pet food and supplies to provide temporary relief to those who need financial assistance.
